Weather Outlook for Macon County 01-29-2013

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a Flood Watch for our area all day tomorrow ahead of a cold front that is expected to drop up to 2.5 inches of rain in just a few hours.


Weather Outlook for Tuesday, January 29, 2013 

 High pressure over the area will weaken and move farther east today. A strong cold front will move across Macon County tomorrow followed by an area of high pressure on Thursday. Another frontal system is expected to approach our area Friday.

Today: A chance of showers, mainly after 3pm. Patchy fog before 11am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 65. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Hazardous Weather Outlook: None expected today. A Flood Watch and High Wind Watch has been issued for all day tomorrow. See below for more information on the severe weather event expected for tomorrow.

Wednesday: Showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 8am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. High near 61. Breezy, with a south wind 15 to 23 mph, with gusts as high as 36 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Wednesday Night: Rain showers likely before 1am, then a chance of rain and snow showers between 1am and 2am, then a slight chance of snow showers after 2am. Some thunder is also possible. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low around 32. Northwest wind 15 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM MOVING FROM THE SOUTHERN PLAINS TO THE GREAT LAKES WILL PUSH A COLD FRONT TOWARD THE APPALACHIANS ON WEDNESDAY. STRONG SOUTHERLY FLOW AHEAD OF THIS APPROACHING FRONT WILL MOVE INTO THE MOUNTAINS AROUND DAYBREAK...AND SHOWER COVERAGE ALONG THE FRONT WILL INCREASE THROUGH THE DAY. THE STRONG WINDS MAY BE SUFFICIENT TO PRODUCE WIND DAMAGE ACROSS THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS OF THE MOUNTAINS...BUT ANY MODERATE TO HEAVY SHOWERS MAY ALSO CHANNEL THE HIGHER WINDS TO THE GROUND IN THE LOWER MOUNTAIN VALLEYS.  * WINDS...SOUTHWEST 20 TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS OF 50 TO 60 MPH...BECOMING WEST WEDNESDAY EVENING.

* MOIST UPSLOPE FLOW ACROSS THE SOUTHEAST FACING SLOPES OF THE SOUTHERN AND CENTRAL NORTH CAROLINA MOUNTAINS WILL RESULT IN AN INCREASING AREA OF RAIN SHOWERS WEDNESDAY MORNING.
